CLINICAL CORNER: Beating Allergic Rhinitis
While June brings beautiful weather to the Kansas City area, it also ushers in a surge of seasonal pollen, grasses, and molds. If you’re dealing with constant sneezing, nasal congestion, or itchy eyes, you are likely navigating allergic rhinitis (often called hay fever).
Understanding the Triggers
Allergic rhinitis occurs when your immune system overreacts to harmless airborne particles. Common local culprits include:
Spring/Summer Trees & Grasses: Bluegrass, fescue, and various tree pollens are highly active this time of year.
Mold Spores: Spiked by recent rains and rising humidity levels.
Symptom Checklist
The four cardinal symptoms of allergic rhinitis include:
Congestion (stuffy nose)
Rhinorrhea (runny nose)
Nasal itching
Sneezing
Proactive Management & Treatment
At Oakhaven Health, we don't just treat symptoms; we help you build a personalized action plan to avoid triggers and optimize your day-to-day routine. Treatment approaches generally include:
Nasal Steroid Sprays: Often considered the most effective long-term treatment for reducing inflammation.
Antihistamines: Fast relief from sneezing and itching.
Environmental Control: Monitoring local pollen counts, keeping windows closed during peak hours, and utilizing HEPA filters.
Stay healthy and breathe easy this summer!
